Thing Essay

Overview

In the final essay, you will be writing about a thing. There are many ways you might approach this essay: you might write more journalistically (there is a lot of great food anthropology that is very journalistic, in addition to cultural critique of other kinds), you might write slightly more academically (many people in the humanities and social sciences trace the influence of nonhuman objects on humans), you might situate a personal memory in reference to a specific thing (so something like a thing-based memoir), etc. Our world is made of things, and they can serve as a bridge between people. Our experience with others is always mediated; we often use objects as a way to understand others and ourselves.

As with the earlier essays, you will also include a brief genre analysis with your essay, which will let me know what genre you were writing in and what elements of that genre you were attempting to include in your essay.

The essay should be around 1500-2000 words. The genre analysis should be around 250-500 words.

The Essay

Your essay should center on a thing. What that ultimately means will depend greatly on the genre you choose to write in. If you’re writing a memoir, you will likely write in a more reflective tone, and try to give your audience a sense of why a particular thing means what it does to you (and by extension how they might recollect about the things in their lives). If you’re writing a journalistic or academic piece, you will want to think about how to incorporate research and likely some theoretical perspective. In other words, the genre you select is going to go a long way in terms of helping you make certain writing decisions.

With that said, I’ll be expecting pieces that are consistent with most of the features of your chosen genre, that demonstrate a clear focus on a place, that have a voice and style of their own, and that try to say something meaningful, interesting, noteworthy, and/or entertaining to a particular audience. You should, in other words, write something that shows you’ve made choices about your topic, your genre, your writing, and your audience.

The Genre Analysis

The impact of genre is a large part of why this assignment also includes a genre analysis. In this analysis, you’ll need to do a few things:

  • Identify (as specifically as you can) what genre it was you wrote your essay in
  • Provide some examples (with links and/or citations) of other essays in that genre (or closely related genres)
  • Analyze how the genre works, what elements it includes, what approaches it relies on, etc.
  • Argue briefly for your essay being a part of that genre, pointing to specific examples from your writing
